James 4:13-17

Jonathan Edwards in Advice to a Young Convert on pride.

Pride in context for James

What is not Condemned

Planning ahead (Proverbs 6:6)

Working hard (2 Thessalonians 3:10)

Profit motive (1 Timothy 5:18)

Practical atheism

The false dichotomy of the Sacred/Secular distinction

"Sundays were Sundays, with the rest of the week largely detached, operating by a different set of rules. Can these two worlds that seem so separate ever merge?" John Beckett

Why is it Condemned? V 14

You do not control tomorrow, God does. (Proverbs 27:1)

You are not promised life tomorrow.

(1 Chron 29:15; Job 7:6-7; 9:25; Psalm 39:5; 102:3, 11; 1 Peter 1:24)

Example of one that failed on this very issue (Luke 12:16-20)

What is Commended v 15

Deo Volente, God or Lord willing.

(James 4:15; Matt 26:42; 6:10; Acts 21:14; 18:21; Rom 1:10; 15:32; 1 Peter 3:17)

We ought to use biblical language in the midst of the world.

That we would confess with Abraham Kuyper, "In the total expanse of human life there is not a single square inch of which the Christ, who alone is sovereign, does not declare,'That is mine!'"
